Tennessee 16-Hour Health & Sanitation Registration is required by the State of Tennessee in order to work as a Hair Braider. As a professional hair braider, it is essential to know how to protect your clients and keep yourself safe.
In the salon, it is always best to have the knowledge needed for safe practices. The choice is yours, whether you choose to work in a salon or continue to braid in your private residence. Wherever you decide on your workplace, it is vital to be registered with the state to maintain compliance.
After completing the course and successfully passing the assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion which proves you have dedicated 16 hours to learning about Infection Control (Health, Hygiene and Sanitation) along with Diseases & Disorders of the hair and scalp.
What is a Hair Braider?
A person that uses techniques that result in tension on hair strands, such as twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking, or braiding of the hair, by hand or mechanical appliances for compensation, without cutting, coloring, relaxing, removing, chemically treating, or using other preparations to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair.

16-hour Health & Sanitation Certification Course
Governor Bill Lee signed into law Senate Bill 1185, which reduces the requirements needed to provide natural hair braiding. As per the Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners website, the law now only requires Hair Braiders to meet the following requirements:
- Obtain 16 Hours of training in health and hygiene in person or online;
- Register biennially and pay a $30.00 registration fee by going to www.core.tn.gov on or after July 1, 2019;
- Use only disposable or properly sanitized instruments; and
- Post a notice in your salon that the Hair Braider is not licensed and refrain from referring to oneself as a natural hair stylist.
